What Happens When You Drop a Sansa Express in Water?
Categories: General Sansa Discussion My Sansa Sansa Express Sansa Accessories
I know you're dying to know. I wish I didn't know, but it's a tale as old as time. Who hasn't dropped a cellphone/mp3 player/other electronic device into a toilet/puddle/bathtub/washer/sink/etc....
My sister dropped my not-so-beloved iPod into her bubble bath (so much for a relaxing soak). Of course, I forgave her, but I gave it to a guy I work with, who happens to fix and sell iPods, and he said that although the screen went black after the submersion, all it needed was a good charge and it was like nothing happened.
I have also heard similar stories of Creative Lab and SanDisk products working just peachy after an unintentional bath. But what happened to my Sansa, is a different story.
Like my sister before me, I was trying to take one of those relaxing baths you hear all about, and it was great (in case you were curious) up until *plunk* went my Sansa. I pulled that sucker out in less than three seconds, I swear; there was no way that thing was under water for more than five. It gurgled a few notes, then died.
I rushed to towel-dry it and then used a blow dryer to get in the cracks. Afterward, it did turn on once or twice, and I opened it with a tiny screwdriver and there was no apparent rust or water damage. The weird thing is, when I plug it in to my USB port, the screen lights up with the little doggie and I get a "charging" message with a battery icon, and it's all animated and fairly clear.
I hate to say this thing is done for, since not only do I get screen activity, but when it's plugged in my folder with all the files opens up. So, if anyone has any advice, please let me know.
P.S.: I also plan on contacting Sansa customer service for their feedback, and I will keep you posted on that, as well.

It's a (MLK Day?) miracle! After my recent frustration with the Zune, I plugged in my Express to see what would happen, and it appears to be in (somewhat) working condition! The screen is a little scrambled, but it is playing music, people!
Hi Momo,
Sorry, no direct experience with a SanDisk product, but having raised 3 inquisitive kids, we had a couple of battery powered radios, a couple of tape players, and several TV remote controls go into one toilet or another. One remote had to be fished out of the toilet's exit plumbing because the perpetrator tried to flush the evidence...
The routine we used was to remove the back of the device, remove the battery, flush liberally with distilled water, towel out as much water as possible. Put the parts of the open device in the sunniest window in the house for several days. (We are in Southern CA, your mileage may vary) Put them back together and try them. About a third didn't wake up after the first treatment. These got additional treatments. All but a few worked after less than two weeks of passive drying. The remaining few went into work where they was subjected to vacuum in a bell jar with a pretty good pump. A few days in the jar and all but one or two worked.
