Sex Sells. Looks sell. Talent can also be developed through training. Exploitation is indeed used here. Though I do agree that any woman should be able to express her sexuality... but for here, why is she using it? to make her album sell better...so she herself is being objectified... she turns herself into a commodity.
Wonder Girls- SO Hot
Categories: My Music & Other Media Music
A friend recently asked me what I thought of Wonder Girls. I didn't know anything about them at the time, but when I looked them up I could see why my friend had known I would be intrigued; they are a 5-girl pop group from Korea. They are also produced my JYP (Park Yin-Young), the mastermind behind several K-Pop stars, including hearthrob "Rain" (look him up; he's, like, so dream.
They're video is below, with English subs. Drink 'em in before we discuss:
I remember, a few years back, when Asian-American comedienne Margaret Cho criticized Gwen Stefani's entrouage of Japanese "Harajuku Girls", calling it a "minstrel show" that promoted negative stereotypes of Asian women as "submissive". Well, I hate to point out the painfully obvious, but it appears that Wonder Girls are perpetuating this stereotype.
Now, I wouldn't say that JYP is exploiting these girls, except for the fact that two are under-age, and I truly believe that a woman has the right to oversexualize herself and if she wants to play Paris, that's absolutely fine. It's just a little disturbing to know that there are little girls looking up (or actually participating) in this kind of sexploitation.
Now, off my soapbox.... This is song is actually really cute and catchy. Plus, the girls are adorable and fashion-forward.
I mean, wasn't this kind of image that propelled the Spice Girls to fame in the 90's? (Doesn't help that this fab-five was also a developed as a result of the subjective auditioning process.)
What do you think?&
