The Sansa Express is a promising product in terms of design, mobility, and usage. However, it has a little work to be done on its firmware capacities. More can be done by either two ways: pressuring the Sansa's Technical team to improve upon it, or porting Rockbox onto it. The latter seems like a good way to go.

I'm not sure that the Engineers will be adding any more firmware additions to the Express, as its now EOL (end of life). This isn't to say they wont, its just doubtful.
As for Rockbox, unfortunately this is up to the Rockbox team, not so much SanDisk's engineers as SanDisk doesn't assist Rockbox. You may want to ask the R.B team if they are planning to do a port on the express or not.. though it would be kinda difficult to do, as the express has a very limited Firmware partition

i cannot get any music to download onto my mp3 player. i usually load it using windows media player and never had a problem before. after i load the songs onto the list and hit start sync the bar out to the side that says preparing to sync never moves. then it stops it by itself. i've done a hard reset and it doesn;t seem to help. i've had it for about 2 years now, is it fried? what can i do?

Dear Sir,

I have just updated my Sansa Express 01.01.05a firmware for the Sansa Express. I think by doing so, I am back to my previous problem where I have limitation on the file size and recording time i.e 75.7 MB and 01:58:36 respectively. I was very satisfied before when there was almost no limitation till either your battery runs out or the memory is full. Please help me to solve this problem. I would also recommend that you provide an 'auto-save function' when the battery or memory space runs out - whichever comes first so that the recording is not lost.

Thanks.

I'm not quite sure what kind of assistance you're looking for. If its about extending the record duration, there isn't anything that a user can do to alter it. I do believe it was extended, as the first firmware revision, you could only get about 22mins with.
For firmware suggestions, you'll probably want to submit an email to Support@sandisk.com although again, i'm not sure that the engineers will be making any more firmware revisions to is, as its been EOL for about 4 years

Lauren,
What version of windows media player are you using? And are you able to sync by drag and drop through the My Computer icon?

Hi Apix, Just to let you know those Express have been recordings up to 8 hours before I install the 01.01.15a firmware. I've regretted for doing it to all the 3 units. I think it's all in the firmware since they program it to stop after 22 mins. why not more ?.

Hi Lauren,
I think you are referring to me being unable to playback the recordings - well not anymore. However I don't really know what version of Window Media Player I am using now. Sorry about that.

Why not release the source to the latest firmware let some fans of the sansa take a stab at it. I would like a delete function on the sansa express. I like this device and it does work, but I have to say is one of the most flakey devices, I think it comes all down to the software/firmware, and the last firmware helped, but is still flakely as hell. Why do people/manufacturers have such a throw away attitude.

As far as I'm concerned - the Sansa Express has fulfilled my needs and rather very very satisfactorily. However, I do agree with you that they should continously upgrade the firmware to keep it at par or better than the rest of mp3 players. I would also be happy to see they improve on the hardware such as a Sansa Express with longer battery life and bigger memory capacity. Another and a very very important aspect to that and which needs consideration is keeping the Sansa Express model. To me it is still one of the best and multifunctional mp3 player.

I still see them available in stores, but what is the use to buy them when the manufacturer has given up on them, sure if you bought it when it originally came out you may have gotten a good use out of it, but it's sad to see a product doesn't even have a shelve life of a couple years. Manufactures should be made responsible for the junk they produce, products should no be produced if there is no commitment to keep it going for 7+ years. This is how we will burn out our natural resources, and fill our landfills. Millions opon millions of these are sold, a small portion of the profits could go to maitenance of the firmware, improvement of the product, customization, and they would benifit from more sales and a satisfied customer base. Or at the bare minuim give the sansa community the source, people that are intrested in the product enough will come out with new versions.

Has a solution to the recording time limitation problem been found (pointed out by HAMBAL)?

I also have a SANSA Express and find it extremelly annoing that it simply stops recording after 1h58m; I have already lost way too many conference endings because of this.

Can anyone point me to which version of the firmware was able to record limited only to the battery or available memory space??? (I have never updated my device's firmware).

Thanks

Let's write an email to SanDisk asking them to open source their firmware. If we get a bunch of our names on there, maybe they'll give in.

I would looove to hack around with my sansa express. He's been the greatest little buddy in the world, and there's a lot more to be done. Like.. putting the date/time on recorded WAVs. Or even simple DSP effects.

I'd rather not swap it for something else more versatile and rockbox-portable... I would be betraying a long time friend.

*writes up an email*

Post/PM a name or comment if you're interested.. I'll send it off when I get a bunch.

I WOULD AGREE WITH YOU VERY MUCH i.e. THE SANSA EXPRESS HAS BEEN A GOOD GADGET. HOWEVER I'VE LOST THEM (WISH I CAN GET HOLD ONE BACK). ANYWAY I THINK THEY SHOULD RELEASE THE EXPRESS BACK INTO THE MARKET AS IT'S RATHER UNIQUE COMPARED TO OTHER SANSA MODELS.

when i record something - can i play it and listen to it immediately? or do i have to upload it to my computer? thanks

Recording yourself and listening to it later? Right after? It's the greatest. Thoughts, moments, songs. Memory augment.

You can go to Music->Recordings->MIC and there it is.

thanks a lot!
