OK, my e280 series V1 constantly freezes up on me, refreshes database whenever I boot up, takes too long to boot up actually, and won't transfer my songs onto the player which usually results in "failed to load image" messages or more freeze ups. And to make matters worse, I am using the latest firmware so I just don't know what to do.

I've heard great things about a more stable firmware with the fuze and I'm wondering how stable it is.  Or if there is SOME way to fix my e280, then I won't really need to shell out 130 dollars for another player.

Have you tried reformatting and starting from scratch? If that does not help you may want to consider a Fuze.
I don't have a E series, but there must be a way to reformat.

you will probably need to create the Sansa.fmt document and reflash the firmware. This will format your player and reload the the firmware and likely stop both the freezing AND load main image fail message.
You will need to boot the player into recovery mode. This can be done by engaging the hold switch then press and hold the record button and connect to the computer.
When you see Welcome to recovery mode on the screen of the player, you can let go of the Record button
Now open up the My Computer icon and open a icon that says 16MB format.
Once open, right-click anywhere in the blank spaces of that folder (anywhere but on the Version.txt document) and select New then select Text Document. Once done, open the newly created text document, go to file, then Save As.
For the Save As file type, change it to All Files. For the name type in: Sansa.fmt and click Save. Now close the text document. The Sansa.fmt should no longer have the standard notebook icon, but a generic windows icon.
Now go to forums.sandisk.com and select the E200 thread, then select the E200 V1 firmware (NOT V2) and download the firmware.
Once downloaded, extract the files and place them in the 16mb format icon along with the Sansa.fmt and the Version.txt document that should already be there. Once all that is done, disconnect the player and you should see "reading main image, writing main image ...." on the screen of the player. The firmware should now be re-flashed and you should be good to go. (take the hold switch off)

BC, yes I tried formatting the thing twice, through WMP, since I have the V1, format selection is not available within the player.

Apix, I believe I've tried that method before but I'll give it another shot.

Well...for the first time, my memory is finally free of any files after "formatting..." text appeared and everything restarted (previously I believe I had some corrupted files earlier that I could not get rid of). Hang on...

Apix: You are a LIFE saver!!!! Everything works!!! Thank you!!! Woohoo!!!! Wow, now I don't need to buy a new one! But anyway, I assume this method applies to all other sansa models as well (if I decide to upgrade one day) right?

Well for some reason, the engineers at SanDisk decided when they made the View, Clip and Fuze (the newer models) that the recovery mode and FMT function would be removed.. I'm not sure why. But for the E200 C200 this works.
For the newer ones, the equivalent to Recovery mode, is forcing MSC mode, and then formatting it (equivalent to the FMT)
