Hello, all.  I'm new here, but have had my e260 for quite a while and I'm mostly happy with it.

I've been happy enough with 4gb, but now I want to expand the capacity. Can I use one of the new micro sdhc cards to bump it up 4gb, or am I limited to a 2 gb card?

Thanks in advance for the input.

Which one do you have? A V1 or V2

To verify which you have, first look on the back in the lower right-hand corner under the CE logo. Does it say e2XX (model number) or e2XXv2 (obviously a v2 unit).

Also, to double-check, go to SETTINGS > INFO on your player & check the top line which will be the firmware version. If it starts with V01.XX.XX (X's represent different numbers) it's a v1 unit. If it says V03.XX.XX, you've got a v2 & it should be able to use a 4 gig card.

Thanks for the info. I've clearly got a v1 and will have to settle for 2gb more.

No, you don't have to! You can use a 4gb MicroSDHC card on your Sansa e260(v1).
All you need is the common Rockbox firmware which is safe, and compatible with SDHC cards. If your interested contact me at Brenscrazy@hotmail.com and I'll tell you how to install, also if you need a card I have a few for cheap.

Brenscrazy,
You are not trying to promote your products are you? That would be against the site rules.

We have no problem talking about Rockbox, but your attempt to sell something makes me wonder what your motivation is.

How about you fill us in?

I do have 3 memory cards all SDHC 4gb, but I was simply stating I had them for less than a typical retail store. I am by no means trying to use this site to advertise, and I will gladly help anyone who is interested in using SDHC cards in their Sansa. Rockbox is a remarkable free, versatile firmware and I think everyone should be aware that it is out there. But as I said, I am not trying to advertise a large stock of memory cards.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I'm wary of replacing the firmware on my player, so I'll settle for a 2gb card.

It makes me wonder, though - if third party software can run a sdhc card, why can't Sansa update its firmware to do the same thing?

I imagine it has nothing to do with a licensing issue given they are the same company, so I'm led to assume they are simply trying to phase out the older models. Sony has done the same with their "phat" psp by making new more advanced accessories that are only compatible with the "slim". Rockbox is still an amazing frimware regardless and I recommend it given the installation is simple and it's just so much better! Especialy you Ipod owners out there...although I have no idea why you would be here xD

Will Rockbox work with Napster To Go? I've heard that it does not.

I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes to rockbox but technically it should. The firmware shouldn't alter the players MTP protocol in any way

Hello,im just bought a sansa e250 2gb,SDMX4-2048,it was a great price overstock selling as refurbished in any case i was lucky enough to find this site and read the posted discussions,i dont know if its a v1 or v2 but when i get it i really would like to be able to use the higher sdhc cards and not have a bunch of 2gb cards to deal with(yes i have many 100 of gb's of mp3),any free safe up grades i can get to accomplish this will be greatly apreciated

Well Lion2112, If you do have a v1 Sansa e250 and need more space, I recommend the firmware change I metioned and you can increase your internal memory. You can purchase a broken sansa e260, e270, or e280 and swap the memory boards. So if you buy a sansa e270 for instance, you can swap your e250's 2gb internal board with the e270's 6gb! If you get an e280 you can have 12gb, its what I did.
The swap it self is pretty easy, just open the player and swap the board. Finding a player may be a different story. However if you do have a warranty it will void.

Brenscrazy,
Great tips. I am gonna have to look for some broken Sansas and do a little swapping. Any good places yu recommend to find them?

Ebay of course, and you may check sites that sell returns from other stores.

September 22, 2008 9:54 PM

Ebay is not bad, have you checked out Craigslist?

Craigslist is great for bigger things like furniture and so on. I've only ever found one Sansa in my area. Ebay gives you the world, craigslist gives you a 10 mile radius. Ebay wins :)

OK,i got my e250 2gb in and it dosent have v1 or v2 on the back it a refurb. i conected it to my pc and found the version document and it says this, version info:product rev.
pp5o22af-05.51-s301-02.18-5301.02.18a-d

base code:05-s301-02.18-s301-02.18a-d

ver.:s301-02.18-s301.02.18a-d

in settings info it has 01.02.18a
no v1 or v2's anywhere
on the back under the ce is e250
NOW,can anyone tell me what version i have and if i can use the sdhc cards?
PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
because the v1,v2 explaintion doesnt seem to fit what i have found in or on the mp3 player?!

September 26, 2008 10:32 PM

E2xx without a V2 next to it will *almost always mean its a V1 player. Based on the firmware revision, it confirms that you have a V1 player. V2's start with 03.
SDHC as it stands on the V1 will NOT work with the mp3 player. The only way currently a V1 player will work with SDHC is to port rock-box onto the device. other than that, right now, the V1 isn't compatible with SDHC cards so 2gb is the limit.

*there have been manufacturer mistakes that have had players that are V2's go out without the correct backs.

September 28, 2008 5:43 PM

Apix is right, if your version number is 01.xx.xxx then you have a v1 player and you can only use SDHC cards with Rock Box. Although I'm really not sure why you wouldn't install Rockbox in the first place, it's much better than the standard firmware.

I can make a tutorial if any one will need it :)

Brenscrazy,
If you want to make a tutorial we would be glad to put it up in an article.
