1. When attempting to run the updater, a message pops up telling me I have no internet connection and I need to fix the problem. Obviously I do have an internet connection since I am using it right now to start this thread. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software.

2. After opening the Sansa Media Converter, a message in the upper left corner tells me there is no available player. Again, the player is connected to the USB port with the supplied cable. I have tried all USB modes. I have also tried unistalling and reinstalling the software. There is no apparent way to force the software to find the player.

Basically all I can use my player for is playing MP3 files which it does very well, but no pictures and no video can be viewed. You see how limiting and frustrating this is? I remember once a while ago having converted videos for the player (probably with another program) but it wouldn't find them. Windows explorer showed they were there but Sansa didn't see them.  I also had pics in JPEG format but got a message that they were the wrong format. I seem to remember simply dragging and dropping these files which I understand now doesn't work?

Got any ideas?

The updater can be quite picky. Sometimes involving uninstalling the software and deleting the registry key as well. I'm gonna need to do some hunting for that key and I'll post back when I find it.
While we're waiting for that, what mode is your player in when you try to use the SMC. Also what version of SMC do you have? Latest is 4.236 (if i remember correctly)

I downloaded and installed the latest version of SMC (4.236) and it found the player in one of the USB modes. I was able to convert a pic and view it on the screen. However, now after being open for about a minute, the SMC gives me this everytime..."Sansa Media Converter.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I tried to convert a video and it only got a few percent in when I got that same error. One thing after another with this...

Hmm... what O.S are you running (SP included)
It may need to be uninstalled fully (including the Registry key)... I know i've got them somewhere, still looking

Alrighty, I found the Regkey (after an almost Quest for Fire type journey) but the Reg key you'll want to search for is: FC053571-8507-44E4-8B6D-AACEAB8CA57C
Delete the entire folder that its located in and restart your computer.

*Note before deleting anything in the registry, make sure to back it up first in case of accidental deletion.
To do this, go to file, and select Export.
Name is something obvious like "SanDisk" or "I hope this works" lol something you can readily identify and then click export (note where it saves as well. Desktop recommended)
If in the event something goes wrong, you can merge the old registry simply by double clicking on the exported registry file.
Still looking for the Firmware Updater

Found it, the Firmware Updater is: E2D7E05E-C8C7-45F4-8D89-D6696075E0B7
Same procedure as the other, make sure to restart after you delete it
