A press release that will soon be... released (hate using the same word twice in a sentence like that), Yahoo is extending their service for the connect through August.  Once the final day has been reached, there will be a firmware update that will allow the usage of all other wireless abilities (aside from Yahoo obviously) to still be used.

It is still unknown if Real will decide to bring up another wireless service to take Yahoo's place at this time.

That's cool. Wonder why they decided to extend it.

You know, that's funny because I came thisclose to joining Yahoo! until I read about their being taken over by Rhapsody. And I was even considering buying a Sansa Connect until I found out that it was discontinued. I wonder if Rhapsody will take over their radio channel service and incorporate it to theirs somehow? Now THAT would be interesting...

If there's anything I'm sure of, its that Real Networks will do a complete overhaul and probably just do either nothing, or make a brand new program, they have the dumb-knowledgy. They can make it glitchier, weaker, and slower than before..

"Dumb-knowledgy??" WHERE do you come UP with these words Apix?? Lol!! You're too funny!!

I hear you on that. I am not a Real Networks fan at all.  Overly bloated software is not my type of thing.

I love VLC Media Player, I can get it do to tons of things. Someday I might have to show you guys how to use VLC to stream music and videos to someone else or over the internet.

Once the Yahoo service is discontinued, what will happen to the downloaded music on the Sansa Connect? Will it be playable as long as I pay my $14.95 to yahoo?

If it's not playable will I be able to access the titles so I can download again via a new service for Sansa Connect?

Also, what does this mean exactly

My post was clipped:

What does it mean that "there will be a firmware update that will allow the usage of all other wireless abilities (aside from Yahoo obviously) to still be used"?

What other wireless abilities? Firware updates? new music service?

The Zing service will still be active. All that will change is the Yahoo wireless radio feature.
I can't remember if Yahoo itself is going to be shut down as well... I'd imagine it would. If the tracks are DRM meaning you didn't specifically purchase the tracks, then if the service is no longer available to reupdate the licenses for the tracks, then no you wont be able to listen to them anymore.
If the service stays, then yes.
Let me do another pass on the press release and see all the details... I'll be back

August 6, 2008 10:28 PM

Thank you!

Can you post the entire press release? If not, when?

If there is Zing (to download songs) will there be another company providing the songs? I love my Sansa Connect and hope they keep the download feature. It really has changed my listening habits!!!

The Yahoo! Music Unlimited functionality on your Sansa Connect device will be removed on August 31, 2008. A firmware update will take place on August 31st updating the functionality on your device. The following capabilities will no longer work with your device:

Users can also continue to play purchased tracks from the Yahoo! Music store, transferred via connection to PC, and view their Flickr photos including the most interesting of the day and personal photosets.

At this time, it is not known whether or not Real Networks will be continuing the service, or creating a new one.
There have been meetings on these matters, but no decision has been made yet.
I'm keeping my ear to the ground on all companies so hopefully we'll get a yes or no around the 31st
