Hello all,

I bought the Fuze specifically so that I would not be hounded by the DRM stuff...but I have a question. Is the DRM software/extra bits tied to each song forever? I am thinking it is, but am asking your computer literates out there!

I have an album I downloaded from ITunes before I found out about the rights issue but now want to put it on my Fuze. I have it on a CD and wasn't putting it anywhere else just to keep that stuff out of my new laptop.

Does it make any difference at all? Just trying to get a handle on the way things are! Thanks.

Jill

From what I know, iTunes does indeed imbed some personally identifiable information into the music and other media files that you download. In addition, the files usually have trouble playing on anything else other than an player authorized to play them.

I encountered this problem when I purchased music from iTunes and attempted to use it on my Rio Karma, and could not.

There is software available to "strip" DRM and your personal information from these files, but I don't think it's either encouraged or legal - but it's possible.

Now, if you burn the song to a CD and re-rip the song to another MP3 file from that, you should not have any embedded information or DRM in the new file. However, this could result in quality loss, although it's debatable whether it can be heard by most people.

Hope this helps! My solution to this problem has been to purchase from merchants that offer DRM free downloads, such as eMusic and Amazon MP3's. My experience with both has been wonderful.

I love Amazon, but thanks for the other possibility! I have gotten rid of all ITunes files and even got a new computer. I may try moving the songs from the CD over and see what kind of quality loss there is. If they are too bad, I could always delete them again.

Thank you!

Jill,
Try downloading the CD music files using Windows Media Player. That should do the trick for you.

Does that help? Does WMP remove DRM (dare I hope)?
