Wow, it seems like an entire forum of people who don't have any issues with their players. The other sansa forum has issues galore.
I'll post this anyway, in hopes that someone who needs it will stumble across it.
I bought a Sansa Clip 1 GB (Balck) and plugged it into my computer Windows XP SP3, WMP11 integrated. In MTP mode windows wants to install it but there's "volume label syntax error" and "install cannot be completed". In MSC mode I kept getting the chime that you get when you plug in a USB device, then I get the one you get when you unplug a USB device, over and over again - connected/disconnected...
Went through tech support and forums and found no real help. Though Sansa tech support was real nice and they did try. They just went through all the steps that were in the forums that didn't seem to be working. I especially like the "Update your firmware" suggestion. I guess that'd be something to do if I ever got my computer to recognize it... I tried all USB modes on the device, flipped all the switches and pressed buttons. I downloaded an MTP porting kit from microsoft and even that didn't work.
I finally got it to work by setting the device to MSC mode, locking the hold button (with power off), and most importantly - using a different USB cable. The little black one that was included failed everytime. I even tried the black cable after I got it to work using a different cable and it failed again.
Honestly, I think it was a combination of issues. SP3, WMP11 and faulty USB cable. I didn't get the MTP porting kit to work (I had high hopes for that one too) as it was in MSC mode when it started to work.
sorry i meant sansa clip 2G but anyway i have a different problem now: i connected the device to my laptop and it works just fine but not on my xp sp2 home pc, so should i change the mode of the usb in the device or not?
Looks like you're not the only one out there with the same problem, but my sansa express (1GB internal+2GB external) worked fine for about a year when all of the sudden it started to do the same thing, but in my case i'm sure it's my computer because i've tried it on diferent ones and it works fine only on my home computer will not work, even my home theatre system will play the files on the sansa express. I also noticed that my V3x phone that used to connect fine will now do the same thing as the sansa clip (connects and disconnects when transfering several files at a time), this is why i'm assuming the problems lies in my windows (some shared file must have gotten deleted or something). I'm pretty sure it was after I unistalled musicmatch 7 when this entire thing started. Did your sansa started to do this after you unistalled something? Or from the first day you bouthg it?? What is the MSC mode?? And how do I get the sansa in that mode?? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!
I guess you don't still have the instruction paper after a year ha? I just got my 2GB Clip and don't know much, but I can tell you what the instructions say.
To set the Clip in MSC mode, turn it off. Lock the power switch (slide it down til the orange dot shows). Press and hold the middle select button as you plug it into your computer. That sequence forces it into MSC mode.
I'm having a slightly different problem: I can get the computer to recognize it by doing the above sequence. But what I want to do is delete the pre-loaded songs (why did they have to
Thanks so much, I've had troubles since my laptop broke and was using on my home pc but wasn't working.
What i did was set to MSC USB mode in settings, turn off, lock, and then plug up and worked fine...and has been working fine since. Hope this helps anyone

I was having the same problem getting my Clip recognized. On the settings, there is a page which says "USB Mode" above "Press and Hold". I just pressed and held the center button on the front of the Clip as I plugged in the USB cable and the Clip was recognized by my SP3 Windows XP computer. One of my USB cables did not work but a Blackberry cell phone USB cable worked fine.
i would like for my sansa clip to start working again...can you help me please?
I never had any problems until recently. My computer crashed and I had it fixed. It is XP and has SP3 now.
Since having the computer fixed, I have no trouble downloading Rhapsody, but am having trouble in being able to get my Sansa Clip to work with it so I can get music onto my Sansa Clip. I have tried downloading Rhapsody from the Rhapsody site, and also have tried several times to install Rhapsody from the disk that came with my Sansa Clip. After Rhapsody is installed and I connect the Sansa Clip to my computer with the little cord that comes with it, this is what happens:
1. New Hardware Wizard comes up (It says that it helps to install software for an MTP device)
2. The Wizard gives me a choice of searching for the software (it can never find it) or inserting the disk again that came with the program. If insert the disk and I go through the steps AGAIN to install Rhapsody, I get the following message:
"Cannot install this hardware. There was a problem installing this hardware: MTP device. An error occurred during the installation of the device. The required section was not found in the INF."
Tonight I spent quite a bit of time on the line with someone from Sansa. He had me switch the player to MSC mode. It was finally recognized by Rhapsody but it only had Tracks underneath, and not the other options that usually show up. The Sansa person told me that the player works in MSC mode so nothing is wrong with the player, but it will not work properly now because my Windows is corrupted! (The manner of this Sansa person also caused me to question his competence)I do not believe that Windows is corrupted...everything else works, all other USB items work, and my computer technician installed a new version of Windows and tested everything extensively before I got the computer back....I did ask him about this before calling Sansa and he referred me to this forum as he was not that familiar with Sansa.
Ideas? Also the person who got the new cord, where did you get it and what size do you ask for? I never had a problem with the cord before, but would certainly be willing to get another one and try it. I want my player to work again, too!
