Couple of ideas.
use XP, make sure you have latest Windows Media player 11. Get the Sansa Updater program here http://www.sansacommunity.com/forum/thread/11116/Sansa-Firmware-Updater/?high...
Install it and make sure it is running, be connected t the internet and then do the above trick.
Also look and see if it creates a new drive for the device in windows explorer.
As usual, I can't resist tinkering with things, what can I say, I'm a huge nerd. I finally ordered a replacement cable for the hand-me-down Sansa e250 I got from my better half; she never used it.
So, I'm attempting to load Rockbox on it and the installation failed. I followed instructions that I found on numerous sites which instructed me to format the player and reboot to remove any corrupted files.
Upon doing this, the unit will not boot. Upon pressing the power (Menu) button, the blue wheel lights up but nobody's home. Holding the menu button makes the wheel turn off, and holding it longer (as advised, for a reboot, for about 30 seconds) merely makes the wheel turn on again. Sigh.
So, I find that there is a recovery mode. Verbatim from the Sansa forums:
Turn off the player.
Slide the Hold/Lock switch on top of the player so an orange color is showing.
Press and hold the REC button and connect the device to the computer.
A message will appear on the device display screen confirming the connection and a 16MB partition will be viewable in My Computer.
Release the REC button.
Yeah, that didn't work either. On a Mac, nothing happens. On Windows XP, it detects something has been added to the USB port but can't load a driver or do anything, and nothing happens on the screen of the player either.
I find it truly hard to believe that my player is bricked when clearly, the recovery mode is designed to get users/tinkerers out of these exact types of messes. Many others have formatted their players and successfully recovered them, like this guy.
So, am I missing anything? Any way to forcibly slap the thing into some kind of reboot or power cycle that I don't know about?
In the meantime, I'm going to drown my frustrations in a nice, cold martini and hope that a Sansa genius can help me out! :)

Good idea, but I tried it and no dice. It can't detect the player as a drive no matter what I do.
It also seems to have run out of power, strangely enough, even though I did charge it. When I unplug it, the click wheel will no longer light up. So I am trying to charge it with an external USB charger.
I'm also curious about something else... I did save all of the original data. I copied it onto a MicroSD card in an attempt to "boot" it off the card, but I don't know if it will work that way.
Usually I'm very positive about this stuff, but it seems I am running out of options. Any other ideas?
I hope you got it charged. If so....
First step: Open the back--four little screws, be careful not to lose them--and take out the battery for half a minute and put it back in. It's a different reset than the power button.
Do you know if you have a v1 Sansa (more than a year old) or a v2 (released about a year ago, but both v1s and v2s were on sale all year)? Look on the back: E200 is probably a v1, E200v2 is probably a v2--but only probably.
There are different steps if the battery trick doesn't work, so don't give up.
Ok, it seems to be holding a charge in the sense that when I press the power button, the blue wheel will light up.
Tried the battery trick and unfortunately, nothing changed... so I guess I'm ready for step 2 and beyond :) I'm definitely not giving up, not at least until we're out of steps!

Not yet, but I suppose that would be a sensible next step. I might try to see if I might be able to mount the partition some other way and re-copy the system files over. I also thought about possibly replacing the system battery, which I uncovered when I disassembled the unit.
I have the same problem excatly. and i am unable to solve it. Help me out guys.
Yeah i just did the same thing, same problems, same no recovery mode, same shock and dismay that I probably have to go buy a new player the day before my birthday. Does anybody know how to fix this? C'mon! If Sansa is going to have a recovery mode, shouldn't I be able to use it? No. Nothing. If you can't tell, I am sad and disappointed.
I bricked my Sansa e250 a few days ago. Only the blue scroll wheel would come on and I couldn't even get the screen to light up. It was a goner. I had very stupidly tried to format the 16mb drive. Apparently, that's the one thing we should never do. But, after a couple of days of trying everything under the sun, I finally did get it back into working order. I found the following post in the sandisk.com forums a life saver. I had to find the required downloads on my own because the link to the recover.rar file was no longer valid. But, it actually wasn't difficult to just google the file names as they appeared in the directions.
I copied and pasted the post for convenience. But, here is the original post (message #8): http://forums.sandisk.com/sansa/board/message?board.id=e200&thread.id=4865&vi...
Needed files:
e200tool for windows: http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/pub/Main/UsefulSansae200Tools/e200tool.zip
- there's also a Linux version, if the Windows version doesn't work for you
libusb-win32-device-bin-20060827: http://sourceforge.net/projects/libusb-win32/files/
e200 bootloader and firmware: http://chrisjs.com/howto-e200r-to-e200/
- look under #5
_______________________________________
1. Download recover.rar from here (SKIP THIS)
2. unpack the libusb-win32-device-bin-20060827.tar.gz to (example) c:\libusb
3 find e200tool.zip and unpack it to (example) c:\e200tool
lots of archives isnt it )))
DRIVER:
1. connect using manufacturing mode (hold button on + center button while connecting)
2. In device manager find unknown device under USB and update the driver. Select driver manually. Navigate to 0781-0720.inf (came with the archive) (c:\e200tool)
3. When windows promt you to install "libusb0.sys" direct it to с:\libusb\libusb-win32-device-bin-20060827\bin\
4. Start-> run -> cmd
5 type:
cd\
cd e200tool
e200tool recover BL_SD_boardSupportSD.rom
6. windows will find another usb device so instead of "0781-0720.inf" choose 0666-E200.inf
7 disconnect player and restart it
STEP 3 (recover bootloader)
1. connect player in manufacruring mode
2. Start-> run -> cmd
3 type:
cd\
cd e200tool
e200tool recover BL_SD_boardSupportSD.rom
but before you hit enter press and hold record button (very important)
Step 4 (firmware update)
1. connect player in recovery mode (RECOVERY MODE!!!! with record button)
2. copy PP5022.mi4 to 16 mb partition
3 restart player
I had to give this a try several times, before I got everything straight.
Gransonec Thansk buddy. I got it right till the 2nd step. But when i try to recover from the e200tool it displays an message as "Cannot lock the drive. The volume is still in use" in the command prompt. Please help me in this regard.
well I have a sansa e250 v2 with firmware v03.01.11a. Now I am able to turn it on, all the menus are usable, the screen is bright and clear, the radio works and all recording functions work. Only thing it isn't recognized by Media Player 11, it doesn't appear in device manager or in My computer. I have tried using the following "recovery" mode procedures: all of them have the hold button "on" or in the so called locked position. And all the procedures have the unit 'off'. the second step is either holding the 'rec' or the rewind or the center button in while connecting the usb cable to the player.
I have rotated cables, ports in the rear of the PC, and even removed the battery for 30 secs or so. I take care to 'shutdown' the unit each time a test is performed.
I have tried these procedures in Win XP SP3 and in Knoppix 6.2 using a live disc. Neither platform recognizes the unit in any discernible way.
So in this case, with the unit's menus fully operable - what is the issue? BTW this unit was bought as a Rhasopdy bound unit for the purposes of downloading songs and worked fine for about 2 years and then suddenly all the songs were gone and the present 'brick' now ensues. also no attempt has been made to load any other software etc.
