I'm on a Mac with iTunes, so I can't help you much with WMP. I do believe that you can sync with WinAmp, a player that I enjoy using on my netbook, but again I don't have experience syncing the Clip this way.
What I can tell you is that you can create m3u playlists in your favorite music program and the Clip will recognize them.
In addition, you can categorize your music using ID3 tags. You can download an MP3 file tagging program or use a music program to tag the files. Then, the Clip will recognize artist, album, and so on. For example, when I drag files from iTunes to the Clip, these tags are automatically recognized with no extra effort.

I have a new sansa Clip. I can add music files but cannot figure out how to organise them into catagories or make shorter playlists. WMP doesn't seem to ever work well and I'd like to sinc to Winamp if I can. The user guides I've found are very basic and really don't let me explore beyond "turn it on".I'm using Vista home premium and I think most suggestions I find use XP and get me a little lost.
Also, if anyone knows what the minidisk that comes with, does? Other than a dedicated link for Rapsody.
