Ok - can now answer my own question!
In case others have had similar problems I'll share the 'solution'.

It turns out that the sansa clip allows you to 'pause' the radio - this essentially applies a mute but to the radio only (MP3s will play just fine).
With radio selected just hit pause again and the radio is back up and running.
